Despite the gray sky and intermittent drizzle, the teachers and students of Poo Elementary School welcomed Alimbukad SY 2023-24 with enthusiasm and excitement. Zontians Wi Suan, Margie Sy, and Lucy Carcel navigated rough waters to attend the opening ceremony, joined by members of the Parent Teacher Association and representatives of local government units.
Now in its ninth year, the program welcomes 120 new kindergarten students and parents who will receive weekly book bags containing five books to read at home for the next eight months. The program now boasts 120 Alimbukad families, with participants continuing to receive book bags through grade 2.
“One of the most important activities parents can do to increase the probability that their child will succeed in school is sharing books and literature together,” Suan emphasizes.
Zonta Club Cebu 2 believes that by reading aloud to children daily at home and providing books where access to libraries and bookstores is limited, the Alimbukad: Basa Pamilya Read Aloud Program is leading the way in fostering a love for books and eradicating illiteracy in the country.
