Strength in Every Story: Zonta Club of Cebu II Empowers Solo Parents in Mandaue City

As part of Solo Parents Week, observed from April 13 to 19, Zonta Club of Cebu II organized a meaningful seminar and its first-ever Solo Parents Gathering in Mandaue City. These initiatives created a safe and supportive space where solo parents could learn practical skills, share their stories, and draw strength from one another.

The seminar brought together solo parent representatives from all 27 barangays of Mandaue City, with more than 100 participants in attendance. Building on this strong response, the Solo Parents Gathering held on May 2, 2026, welcomed 133 solo parents, together with their group leaders and officers, for an afternoon dedicated to listening, learning, and empowerment.

Spearheaded by Mildred Simolde and co-organized by Petite Garcia, the events focused on the realities of raising children alone amid economic pressures and the growing influence of social media on family life.

Alex Del Mar led an engaging session on Effective Parenting Skills, sharing practical strategies to help parents build meaningful conversations with their children and remain actively involved in their lives. Rose Gonato delivered an equally impactful presentation on Self-Care for Solo Parents, reminding participants that caring for their own emotional, mental, and physical well-being is essential to raising resilient families.

The program was deeply moving as participants openly shared stories of perseverance and courage. One mother recounted how, after the passing of her husband, she has been raising nine children on her own while overcoming tremendous hardships. Her story touched everyone present and reflected the extraordinary strength and determination of solo parents.

Only Zontians can stand under the intense midday sun and still welcome 133 registrants with genuine smiles, Flat Tops chocolates in hand, and hearts ready to listen. This spirit of service and compassion was evident in every detail of the event.

The Zonta Club of Cebu II extends heartfelt gratitude to the many members whose dedication made the gathering possible. Special thanks go to Mildred Simolde, Petite Garcia, and the welcoming and registration committee composed of Laurie Boquiren, Wi Suan, Marilou Cañizares, Cita Chan, Bebot Ramas, and Mariter Klepp.

The club also expresses appreciation to Nat Ngo for providing slippers, Maia Franco for coordinating the pasta donation, and Mildred Samolde for personally purchasing the towels and assembling the giveaway packs.

Additional thanks are extended to Wee Wu for leading the prayers, and to Lucy Carcel, Mayet Malinao, Flor Miel, Margie Sy, Nonie Uy, Myrna Tan, Janet Chua, and Christi for their invaluable support, including managing the projector and sound system throughout the event.

A special thank-you is also extended to Annalie Gepega for her steadfast support and commitment to the welfare of solo parents.

The overwhelming response and enthusiastic calls for future gatherings affirmed one powerful truth: this is only the beginning.

Through initiatives like these, Zonta Club of Cebu II continues to advocate for women and families, strengthen communities, and empower solo parents with the knowledge, support, and hope they need to build brighter futures for their children.
