Launching Literacy: Z Club of Childlink Supports Early Reading in Barangay Guadalupe

Cebu City, November 5, 2024 – The Z Club of Childlink, a youth-led branch of the Zonta Club of Cebu 2, has taken an inspiring step to support literacy in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. With a special donation to the remedial reading program at Ramon Duterte National High School, the club aims to empower Grade 7 and 8 students by providing books tailored to their reading needs.

The month-long book drive, led by Z Club President Zachary Gomez, gathered gently used and new books from generous student donors during the school’s Literary Month celebration in October 2024. Each book was thoughtfully selected for beginner readers, focusing on those who face challenges with literacy. Students packed the books into personalized donation boxes they created, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Dubbed the “Literacy Launchbox,” each box symbolizes more than a book donation—it represents a launchpad for student growth in literacy and learning. The name "Launchbox" emphasizes the initiative’s goal of opening doors to new opportunities for young learners to strengthen their reading skills.

“The Literacy Launchbox is not just a collection of books; it’s a launchpad for students’ futures,” shared Z Club President Gomez. “We wanted to inspire and support our fellow students, especially those struggling with reading.”

The Literacy Launchbox project aligns closely with the Department of Education’s DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) initiative, which encourages schools to prioritize reading time and foster improved literacy skills. Through this effort, the Z Club of Childlink contributes to the national movement aimed at elevating educational outcomes for Filipino students.

By delivering the Literacy Launchbox, the Z Club of Childlink has made a meaningful impact on the lives of their peers in Barangay Guadalupe, showcasing the power of student-led initiatives to support educational equity and inspire the next generation of learners.
