Resilience, Generosity, and Faith: The Fire Victims of UTB in Looc, Mandaue City

On October 4, 2024, in the heart of Mandaue City, the community of fire victims from the Under The Bridge (UTB) area found new hope at the relocation site in Looc. Composed of families who lost their homes and possessions, this small community has shown incredible resilience and a remarkable spirit of generosity. As they prepare to honor their patron, Our Lady of Fatima, the fire victims, rather than dwelling on their hardships, are uniting in a touching display of faith and community. In a heartwarming gesture, they are cooking and offering barbecue—fish, pork, and chicken—free of charge to neighbors and visitors, exemplifying how, even amid adversity, the bonds of community shine brightly.

Members of the Zonta Club of Cebu 2, clad in their maroon attire, visited the site and were warmly welcomed by Barangay Captain Raul “Kevin” Cabahug. They were introduced to the community as potential partners in livelihood programs and other services. The Zonta Club’s involvement will be pivotal in organizing future activities aimed at uplifting the spirits of the fire victims, who are striving to build a secure and nurturing environment for their children.

Zonta’s commitment to empowering women and supporting families aligns perfectly with the needs of this resilient community, promising a brighter future filled with hope, faith, and unity.
